Symposium "60 years of the Council of Europe, 50 years of the European Court of Human Rights"



The year 2009 marks the 60th and 50th anniversary of the Council of Europe and the European Court of Human Rights respectively. Over the years the work of the Council and the Court has enjoyed continued interest from the Dutch parliament. The committees on European Affairs and Justice of both Houses there fore wish to invite interested parties to celebrate these twin anniversaries and on this occasion to reflect on the current and future role of the Council of Europe.

The symposium will commence by taking stock of the various aspects of the role of the Council of Europe. The second half of the symposium will explore the impact of the Council of Europe on the Netherlands, with a particular focus on the areas of asylum and immigration law and criminal law. Speakers will include Mr. Th. Hammarberg, Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe, Mr. F.C.G.M. Timmermans, Minister for European Affairs of the Netherlands, Mrs. N. Albayrak, State Secretary of Justice of the Netherlands and Mr. B.E.P. Myjer, judge at the European Court of Human Rights. The symposium will be chaired by Prof. E.C.M. Jurgens, former Vice-President of the Senate and former member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

Registration opens at 13:00 for official opening of the symposium by the President of the Senate at 13:30. A detailed programme can be found here.
